There are three main methods to deal with damaged or scratched CDs, scratched DVDs and scratched game discs. Each of these disc varieties are manufactured from polycarbonate plastic so scratches or marks to the information surface of such discs can be handled in the same way.

The easiest way to get them repaired can be seen here

Before we start there are a few things you must be conscious of.

In the instance of CDs the data on the disc is really on the bottom of the label so if the disc you are addressing has a heavy scratch on the label there is little you can do to recover from this. A large amount of scratches to the reading face of the disc can be repaired.

Concerning DVDs the information is encased between two layers of polycarbonate and is much more effectively protected. A mark to the label is of no consequence for recovery purposes.

Game discs may well be CDs, DVDs or even Blu-ray so verify which it is to begin with so that you are certain what you are addressing.

Lastly Blu-ray discs. Along with the launch of Blu-ray a new system and technology of disc production was created. None of the methods delineated here with the exception of software retrieval are valid to Blu-ray and will definitely give rise to added damage to the disc.

The initial technique of repairing scratched discs is by employing specially designed disc recovery software. This is the least intrusive method and by far the safest of the three.

On the marketplace now there are a number of software programs that either focus in disc repair or contain disc repair functionality as a component of their line up. Some of the established programs are Isobuster and CD Roller. They are specifically intended to recover data from scratched discs of all types.

Additionally contained in this group are Nero 9 and DVDfab. Nero 9 presently offers a module dubbed RescueAgent which has been designed to complete many types of disc information repair.

DVDfab in itself was not intended particularly for disc repair or to correct data from damaged discs. Yet DVDfab was designed in such a way that it has a large number of strategies by which it can examine any disc presented to it. Due to this, it can routinely circumvent or re-read damaged elements in several different ways resulting in the recovery of the data.

To make use of any of these products all you need to do is place the disc into the DVD ROM of your PC and run the software. In a large number of cases this will be adequate to duplicate the contents of the disc to your hard drive and from that point you are able to create a brand new disc.

The second system of restoring a scratched CD, DVD or game disc is by utilizing a CD DVD disc repair machine.

If the software procedure above fails to work out then this would be my next best selection. There are several reliable disc repair machines to be had that are able to get exceptionally good results.

CD DVD disc repair machines are better than dealing with it by hand for the reason that they direct an unvarying pressure to the whole disc surface and do not need to be excessively harsh to the disc exterior due to of their high rotation speeds. Also they apply cleaning and buffing solutions that are intended specifically for the task.

The lone negative is that there are inferior disc repair machines available that are for all intents and purposes worthless and could even damage the disc more. Prior to investing in such a device be sure to read reviews and user response to make sure you acquire a good one.

The last process of recovering a scratched DVD or CD is to repair the surface of the disc manually.

This is generally a simple process employing normal items you likely have lying about the house. What you are on the lookout for on this point is a very mildly abrasive product that will take out scratches and still take the disc back to a full shine.

On the Internet nowadays there are countless sites and videos promoting the use of many different products to fix scratched discs. Many are sound and some are just plain ridiculous!

The only products that have the properties to re-surface the polycarbonate of a disc and re-establish the initial shine are either auto polish, furniture polish or Brasso. Any suggestion such as banana skin, toothpaste and many others do not possess the ability to get rid of the scratches. Any success anyone at any point enjoyed with these would have been because of the disc merely requiring a thorough clean and polish in the first place.

The method for utilizing either auto buffer or Brasso is to apply a little to the whole surface of the disc means of a soft cloth. By no means use paper towel as it is extremely coarse. Softly wipe the area of the scratch in addition to the balance of the disc face until you make out it is reduced and subsequently finish with straight strokes from the middle of the disc to the external perimeter. Bring the whole disc back to the original shine with a clean cloth. Repeat until the scratching has reduced a lot and good software can now read the disc.

Regardless of which approach you determine to use… burn a back up copy right away so you at no time have to accomplish this again!

The theory goes like this - A CD/DVD reader or player uses a laser beam to read the data on the disk. This laser beam crosses the protective plastic layer and reads the real recording metal layer. If the protective plastic layer is scratched, the laser will be unable to pass resulting in non-readable disc. In the case of data CDs the CD/DVD reader is unable to read the CD/DVD properly resulting in reading errors while in case of audio/video discs, the CD player skips when we play it.

If somehow we manage to re-smooth this protective layer then the laser will reach the data and read it, now there are many ways we can achieve this using common household item’s as discussed below:

1). Toothpaste - Yups! Toothpaste is our very first scratched CD/DVD fixer, you can use any non-gel based toothpaste for this, just put a very small amount of it on the scratched area and polish it gently using a cotton swab, sometimes the paste may cause new minor scratches but they are just superficial. 2). If the above trick does not work try some metal polish like Brasso gently wiping with a soft cotton ball followed by application of Vaseline.

3). Baking Soda - make a small quantity of baking soda paste and apply using a soft cotton cloth buffing the bad scratch. Clean the baking soda before using the disc.

4). You can also try using some oil as a polishing agent this also works many times.

DVD repair instructionsFrom no power to no reading of discs or failure to show up on the screen - all of these are some of the common problems and errors faced by those who have DVD drives as external or internal drives.

Some of these problems are common both to the external and internal drive and can be fixed with little application or by following the tutorials that come with these drives.

Here are some simple steps that you should follow to get your rom working as good as new.

Step one: In case, there is no power in the external drive, it is pertinent to check the power or cable connections. A loose power connection invariably prevents the drive to show up.

Step two: If the power plug or the socket is fine and other devices are working from the same connection, then the surge protector or the cord may be the culprit. Internal DVD drives get their power supply from the connector. If connector is also fine then problem lies with the DVD and not the power supply.

Step three: Another common problem is when the DVD tray refuses either to eject or go back in. In some cases this problem gets fixed by rebooting while in a few others it may persist and may necessitate reinstallation of the DVD software.

Step four: One of the serious errors and problems PC owners face is when Windows XP or Windows 2000 fails to recognize the device. It may be because of faulty data cable or improper installation of the device. Reinstallation with a proper authentic CD would normally fix this problem.

Step six: If your drive has power and your Windows operating system recognizes it but still it does not read the discs it may be because of dirty laser lens in the drive. Clean the laser lens with a cleaning kit or run some other discs after cleaning kit and then try. Normally it should work after the laser lens has been cleaned.

The Problem may still persists if the DVD has scratches or has been home burnt. Some drives do not read home burnt discs.
